What a custom hostname is for
Your server comes with a hostname of ours, the Mail host (MX target) from your welcome email. A custom hostname lets you use a name on your own domain instead, for your console address and as your MX target. The original hostname keeps working alongside it.
Point the name at your server
Create the DNS record first, at the company that hosts your domain's DNS.
- Choose a name, for example
mxfilter.example.com. - Create an A record for it pointing at your SpamDuster server's IP address. To find the IP address, look up your
Mail host (MX target), for example
nslookup 123456.customer.spamduster.com.
Set the custom hostname
- In the console, open Advanced.
- Under Custom hostname, enter the name.
- Select Save.

If the name already points at your server, a certificate for it is requested within a few minutes. If it does not point there yet, the console says so and tells you the IP address to use; once the record is in place, select Retry certificate request.
Use the custom hostname as your MX target
After the certificate is issued, you can point your MX records at the custom hostname. See Point your MX records at SpamDuster.
Use your own certificate
SpamDuster gets and renews a free certificate for your hostname automatically. To use a certificate you bought instead, use Upload your own certificate under TLS certificate in Advanced: provide the certificate with any intermediate certificates and its private key, both in PEM format. The certificate is checked first and must have at least 30 days left.
Go back to the original hostname
Clear the Custom hostname field and select Save. The original hostname is used again.
