Where does SpamDuster Cloud run?
On Linode, Akamai's cloud platform. Every customer gets their own dedicated SpamDuster server, which we deploy, update and monitor for you — there's no cloud account for you to open, log into or pay separately.
Can I run SpamDuster on my own servers?
Yes — that's SpamDuster On-Premise. It installs as an appliance on your own hardware or virtualization platform, in two editions:
On-Premise Inbound, available now, filters the mail you receive (listings on the AWS, Google Cloud and Azure marketplaces are coming soon), and
On-Premise Outbound, coming soon, filters the mail your servers send.
See on-premise.
What do I need to run an on-premise appliance?
A virtual machine on VMware ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V, KVM or Proxmox, or a physical server — and an internet connection. The appliance installs from a single ISO with a guided setup, and it reaches us to activate its licence and receive filter and security updates.
Tell us your mail volume and we'll recommend a size.
Can I run SpamDuster in my own AWS, Google Cloud or Azure account?
Yes, for inbound mail. On-Premise Inbound will be available through AWS Marketplace, Google Cloud Marketplace and Azure Marketplace. It runs in your own cloud account and you manage it the same way as an appliance on your own hardware. On-Premise Outbound runs on your own hardware and virtualization platforms. If you'd rather we run the server for you, that's SpamDuster Cloud, fully managed on Linode.
Are inbound and outbound the same appliance?
No. They're separate appliances, licensed separately. Inbound and outbound mail have different jobs, and keeping them apart means a problem on one side never affects the other. Run either one, or both.
How many domains and mailboxes does one server cover?
On SpamDuster Cloud, each plan includes a number of domains and email addresses (from 100 and 1,000 on Micro to 10,000 and 100,000 on Enterprise Plus), and domain expansion packs add more; domains are never refused. An on-premise mail-server licence used with a supported hosting control panel includes unlimited domains and email addresses. Only domains you add to an on-premise appliance by hand or through the billing API come in domain packs. See the
pricing page.
Does it work with my hosting control panel?
Yes. SpamDuster integrates with cPanel & WHM, Plesk (on Linux and Windows) and DirectAdmin, syncing your domains and accounts automatically, in the cloud or on-premise. It also works in front of any standard SMTP mail server.
Can my users manage their own filtering?
Yes. The self-service portal lets each user review their quarantine, release false positives, mark messages as spam or not spam, and keep personal allow and block lists — reducing the load on your support team.
What does it protect against?
Spam, viruses and malware, and phishing — scanning message content, links and attachments. SpamDuster Cloud and On-Premise Inbound protect the mail you receive; On-Premise Outbound protects the mail you send.
Does SpamDuster filter outbound mail?
Yes, with SpamDuster On-Premise Outbound, coming soon: an appliance that scans the mail your servers send, so a compromised account or a hijacked script can't turn your network into a spam source and damage your IP reputation. SpamDuster Cloud filters inbound mail.
How is pricing calculated, and who do I pay?
You pay us. SpamDuster Cloud is one monthly charge covering your dedicated server on Linode and SpamDuster together. On-premise appliances are licensed per mail server. Cloud plans include set numbers of domains and addresses, with expansion packs for more; on-premise mail-server licences include unlimited domains and mailboxes, and domain packs cover domains added by hand or through the billing API. See the
pricing page.
What happens if an on-premise licence lapses?
Mail keeps being filtered and delivered for 14 days while the management console, reporting and additional detection engines pause. After that the appliance holds new mail with a temporary error: sending servers queue it and retry, and delivery resumes as soon as you renew. Sending servers give up after about 5 days, so renew promptly.
Do I need to manage the server?
With SpamDuster Cloud, no — we provision, run and update the server and handle its billing; you manage policy and users, never infrastructure. On-premise, you provide the hardware or virtual machine and we deliver signed updates automatically. Threat signatures and rules refresh continuously in the background either way.
Where does blocked mail go?
Into quarantine, where it's held safely for review. Nothing is silently deleted — admins and users can inspect and release anything that was caught by mistake.
